I’ve always been a fan of wordpress. It’s fantastic software and a very versatile CMS platform. You can configure it almost any way you want, it has thousands of themes and plugins, is backed by hundreds of professionals and has become the new standard for blogs and CMS websites. For me it’s always been easy to use and reliable, until now!
The arrival of version 3.0 has been accompanied by much fanfare and promises amazing new functions. I have a test wordpress blog, so I thought I’d try it out. Using a test blog is a much safer way of trying new themes, plugins and anything else I’m working on. I can make changes, which don’t affect visitors to my blog.
My test blog was running version 2.7 and as most wordpress owners know, there are buttons on the dashboard to invite you to upgrade when a newer version is available. So, I hit the automatic upgrade button…and nothing happened. No upgrade and no words of wisdom appeared.
Okay, so I’ll upgrade it manually. The wordpress site has good instructions on how to do it. So, I followed them to the letter. The manual upgrade failed. Although it did ask me for the database details but them promptly failed with some obscure error message.
Down but not defeated, I thought it’s only a test site so I’ll completely remove the old code and build a fresh installation. This is something I’ve done many times using the famous wordpress 5 minute installation and it’s always worked perfectly. Not this time! A brand new installation failed with another obscure error message. Right now, my test blog is in pieces. I’m not impressed.
Have wordpress become so popular and grown so big they are becoming another Microsoft. As most people know Microsoft is guilty of releasing new software before all the bugs are ironed out. I think the wordpress team have some work to do and I would advise anyone to stay away from version 3.0 until it becomes a little more stable. I think I will regress my test blog to version 2.9 for the time being.
Is wordpress 3.0 unstable? It looks that way to me.
