Installing a wordpress blog

by Terry Dunn on July 30, 2009

The first in a 5-part series, together we will build a blog using the famous 5 minute wordpress installation. The featured video will show you the steps. You may have thought about building a hosted blog with blogger, but I recommend you host your own blog using wordpress, on your own server, and with your own domain name.

WordPress.com is similar to blogger; they both host the blog for you. All you need to do is sign up, chose a theme and add your content. WordPress.org is the home of the wordpress blogging software, installation instructions, advice and resources. It’s open source software so it’s free for you to download and install on your host server.

By hosting your own wordpress blog you have so much more control. It allows you to choose and register your own domain name, which looks a lot more professional. It shows you mean business. But you need to choose and pay for hosting too.

The host provider you choose must be able to support wordpress. You will also need FTP software. Filezilla is open source software, so it’s free. And it’s easy to use. Follow the steps in the video to download and install wordpress. The installation includes configuring an administration file with a few details, which your host will provide.

Once wordpress is installed, it will create a username and password, which will allow you to login to the dashboard. The dashboard is your blog’s ‘back-end’ manager for configuring features, creating and organising posts. All you need to access the dashboard is a browser, Internet connection, your username and password.

In the next post we will look at hosting in more detail.
