Creating a wordpress theme

by Terry Dunn on January 16, 2010

Have you ever noticed how many bloggers and even websites have developed their own wordpress themes? They may sell them or give them away as a premium for another product or to persuade you to opt-in to their email list. And, perhaps you’ve thought to yourself, that’s a good idea – I’d like my own theme(s). Well, I have. Trouble is, I not so sure I have the technical know-how to build it. Or, if I have a go anyway, it might take me forever.

The ability to offer your own theme designs is a good move for a webmaster of website owner. It makes you look a little more professional. Especially if you use the design on your site. But how can you do it? There are some useful tools around to help you. Artisteer is a clever product. It allows you to become a website designer, but without knowing the technical details. Today’s video is from Chris Pirillo as he shows us how to use Artisteer.

For total control over your design, the best solution is to code it yourself. It may be a tall order if you don’t have the technical knowledge, but the techies at wordpress are a helpful bunch and have provided some excellent documentation to get you started on wordpress theme development.

Another option is to choose a wordpress template that provides a blank canvas for you and is customisable. There are some great wordpress themes that fit the bill. Elemental is a clean and powerful blog framework. Frugal is fully customisable without any coding. And headway is an easy to use wordpress theme that works for do-it-yourselfers and developers alike.

But if you have a reasonable budget, don’t want to do it yourself but want professional results, then hiring a freelance wordpress web designer is the answer. Get a freelancer specialises in outsourcing for small business, where you can post a project brief and find a freelance web designer to build your theme.

There are plenty of choices for your own wordpress theme.
