Why you need a tribe

by Terry Dunn on December 15, 2009

In today’s video Loic TV is interviewing Seth Godin on why you need a tribe. In case you didn’t already know, Seth Godin is a sought after speaker and marketer, owner of squidoo and has written numerous books on marketing. He has also written a book called ‘tribe’. And with his unique style, he argues if you want to build influence in business, you need to lead a tribe. But what does he mean by this?

Before you can lead a tribe you must have something to say; want to make a change or to make things better. And you can build influence simply by leading people who think and feel the same way you do. But it has to be important to you. You must care about it. And you need to be the leader; to lead the way; to make things better. Seth tells us real change comes from small groups of people. You only need a thousand people in your tribe. A small but committed group of people is enough.

So, if you are in business for yourself or your company, what is your story, culture or focus of your business? You can you inspire others but first you need to be remarkable (another Seth’ism). In what way remarkable? In the video Seth tells us when google mail first started, you joined by invitation only. It was unique and not like the other web-based email services and they didn’t market or promote it at all, yet people clamoured to join. And today, it’s a very popular service. If your story is remarkable, then people will come to you. You won’t need to push it.

Interestingly, Seth is not a fan of social media and he doesn’t have a twitter account. Yet, the tools to build a community are right in front of you. Social networking is a quick and easy way to build a community of followers, particularly if the face of your business is you. So, if you can be remarkable. Have a unique story to tell. Can build a community of followers and be a leader. You will soon have your own tribe and all the influence you want.

If you want to be successful and attract people and customers, you need your own tribe.
