Qualities of a good marketer

I don’t think he’s right, I know he’s right. Seth Godin says positive thinking boosts our confidence and performance. Why then, do so many people exercise negative thinking? Maybe it’s because we are so used to it, we don’t realise we are doing it. The implications for your business are not good. If you are not seeing the positive side of life, this will show in all your communication, both verbal and written.

So, how can we be more positive? Let’s start with laughter. I’m serious. Eric Garner explores what a few laughs can do for your business. He says finding a reason to laugh can improve your creativity, and you can even measure the creativity of your organisation by using a laughometer. And isn’t it true we spend too much time watching and reading about the doom and gloom on the TV and in the newspapers. It’s time to lighten up and smile.

Here is a man with every reason to be happy. Gary Vaynerchuk is the star of the very successful video blog wine library TV. It all started when he inherited the small family wine business and was searching for a way to promote it. He came up with the idea of simply talking, on camera, about what he knew and loved best. The rest is history. He has a huge fanbase. And now he has written a book called crush it: why now is the time to cash in on your passion. It’s not released yet, but I’ll be getting a copy as soon as it’s out. Whether Gary realises it or not he is a star marketer.

What are you? Are you a marketer or a technician? Chris Knight says you need to know because the marketer will win out over the technician. I have to admit I am more of a technician than a marketer. But I know, and plan, to spend more time working on becoming a better marketer because I know how important it is.

This is so true. Jeff Sexton persuades us that relevance always wins. I don’t need convincing. I’m sold already. Jeff insists if visitors can’t scan your website and immediately see what you do, what you are offering and why they should care, they will leave. I do the same. And hasn’t google been drilling us for ages on the value of being relevant. You’ll know this if you have a google adwords account. Google rewards your ads for relevance with a lower cost per click.

These are not just laudable qualities, they are essential in todays online world.
