Technology we can really use

by Terry Dunn on September 9, 2009

Have you heard about cloud services? It’s the latest buzzword. The big idea is we save our data and run all of our desktop (PC or Mac) applications from a cloud server somewhere on the Internet instead of our local hard disk. It’s a little like going back to the old days of dumb terminals connected to a mainframe computer. One advantage I can see is you will never lose your data if your PC crashes. Well, it’s less likely. The other advantage is scale. Huge data centres providing all your data, application and hosting needs too. If this idea inspires you read Sean’s roundup article on 10 solutions for your cloud hosting needs. I think cloud computing is the future, but the future has started already.

And talking of applications, Adobe AIR is a new technology, which allows developers to build rich Internet application across different operating systems. You may have noticed many of the twitter 3rd party software programs run using AIR. This is because it can show your tweet timeline in real time instead of refreshing the screen, which you must do if you use the twitter website to watch your tweets. But AIR has many other applications too. Dicky has found 10 AIR applications to view, download and share photos on flickr. It all helps to improve your browsing experience.

If you are a blogger, and you use wordpress, have you ever wondered what gears is? The wordpress ‘techies’ have used google gears to speed up wordpress, especially the administrative interface or dashboard. I must admit I was curious. So, I just had to watch this video from Stefan on speeding up wordpress with google gears. It doesn’t work with chrome. Maybe google thinks chrome is fast enough already?

New technology benefits everyone who browses, making it more real.
