The google wonder wheel

by Terry Dunn on January 23, 2010

Most webmasters know about google’s free keyword tool, but have you heard about the wonder wheel? No? I hadn’t either, until I watched the video about it from Matt Cutts. This is today’s video. Matt explains how and why you may want to use the wonder wheel.

To see the wonder wheel in action, lets say you type in search engine optimisation into the google search box. Then you click on show options, then click on the wonder wheel. What you will see is a flash application that displays a wheel, with your original search term in the middle of the wheel and related keywords on spokes connected to the wheel. So, this is graphical representation of keywords related to your search term.

Now click on one of the related keyword phrases and a new connected wheel appears, with it’s own set of related keyword phrases. What a great way to explore a keyword for related phrases. You can start with the keyword you care about and find all kinds of words and phrases you would never have considered. It helps you to brainstorm in a visual way.

So, how could you use this? Suppose you want to write an article. Choose a topic and create a wheel. Then click away until you get all the related phrases you can handle to write your article.

I think the wonder wheel is a great tool for webmasters.
