Solving hosting problems

Problems with your website hosting provider can be frustrating to solve. And if you rely upon a website for your business income, it can cause sleepless nights. The best advice from experts is do your homework before choosing a host, but that’s no guarantee you won’t get problems. Even the best host can have downtime. And then there is the problem of understanding what the problem is! Technical support engineers often use jargon and language you cannot understand but you feel stupid asking them to explain.

This is where a web hosting forum is invaluable. And one of the most popular forums is webhosting talk. Registration is free with full posting privileges. There is paid membership, but it doesn’t seem to give you much extra, but then it only costs $50 a year. With over 6 million posts, 232,000 registered members and 28 posting categories, you are sure to find a discussion of your problem and usually the answer too. These forums have many tech-savvy members. In my experience, whatever the problem, or question, the answer is somewhere on the forum. Someone else has had your problem.

But if your problem or question is so obscure, or you can’t understand the problem, there is a wiki. However, it’s no ordinary wiki. It’s a community project to create the largest, most comprehensive guide to the technologies and companies behind the hosting industry, with 363 guides, tutorials and articles.

There is also webhosting news; regular articles every day on what’s happening in the hosting industry. And find a host; a directory of host providers, advertising their services, organised into 12 different categories. Anything you want to find related to web hosting is bound to be on this site.

If you don’t like webhosting talk, there are other web hosting forums. Sitepoint is a well respected authority website with very active forums and well worth a visit.
