How do you take an idea for a logo and and bring it to life? Graphic designer Chris demonstrates how he works with a client to create an idea and go from free-form sketch to completed logo, step-by-step. I’ve never witnessed this process and found the video facinating. Chris starts by talking to the customer and sketching ideas on paper. Then he scans the sketches into his computer and uses an open source graphics program called blender to manipulate the sketches.
He then uses gimp, another open source graphics program to work the sketches into a completed logo. It’s amazing what you can do with free, open source software, if you have the skills. But that’s the key isn’t it? You need the right skills to use these clever software programs. I have Adobe fireworks, which can create fantastic results, but not when I use it. Graphic design is truly a creative endevour. I suspect you need a combination of artistic talent and learned skills to be a good graphic designer. But how can you judge if a professional designer is good or not?
Jacob Cass is a graphic designer who specialises in corporate identity (logos), web design, print design and branding. In his article on how to choose a logo designer he provides 10 tips to help you choose the right professional for your design project,
- Proven success and experience

Most of his tips are common sense, but then how often do we employ logic and common sense when we buy professional services? Not as much as we should. Especially when you think logo design is probably the most important part of your business brand or identity.
