Twitter lists are now open to all users. It’s official. But what does it mean for us? It means all users can make their own lists, but of more interest, they can see which lists they are on. It could become a popularity metric. And popularity is key in social networking. It’s like the air we breathe. Without it we would be a social leper.

So, how can you become popular? Chris Brogan is a very popular blogger. His blog is No. 57 in the top 100, he has nearly 35,000 RSS subscribers and 106,000 twitter followers. What is the secret of his popularity? In the featured video David Meerman Scott interviews Chris Brogan and asks him why he is so popular on twitter and the blogosphere.

Chris is always helpful to his readers. He writes blog posts to help others by finding and sharing useful information. He writes often, publishing at least one post a day. And as well as being a thought leader on his topic, which is how to use social media and social networks to build relationships and deliver value, he is a conversationalist.

On twitter he replies to as many comments as he can and tries to stimulate conversations. He replies often and publicly instead of using a direct message. This is so all followers can see the conversation, get something from it, and engage if they want to. Whatever he knows he wants to share. This is what social networking is all about. It a simple and effective strategy we can all learn from, especially the spammers and peddlers you see on twitter all the time.

Are you working on improving your popularity?
