Real-time search results

by Terry Dunn on November 6, 2009

If you have followed the news recently, you’ll see there are deals being made between google, twitter, bing and facebook around the topic of integrating real-time news in search page results. This is a new and exciting development. Michael Boland from search engine watch asks are local and social coming together.

Michael discusses some of the applications to local and mobile searches that could unfold. But how will google and bing address recency verses relevance. They work against each other don’t they? Google and bing, especially google, are focussed on relevance. Whereas twitter and facebook, especially twitter, are focussed on recency. What is most relevant isn’t necessarily the same as what’s happening now.

But if you want to have these features in your searches now and can’t wait for google, Bill Bouchard from mannix marketing shows you how to get real time twitter search results on google by adding a firefox script. Infact, he shows you how to install the greasemonkey script and userscripts script.  Both achieve the same goal but the results look a little different. You will also need the greasemonkey add-on.

The featured video shows the userscripts script in action. If you type ‘football’ into the google searchbar, you will get up to 5 of the most recent tweets on football, followed by the regular google search results. So, now you can see what’s relevant and what’s happening now, all on the same page.

Real-time search results are here already and it can only get better.
