Your own apache web server

by Terry Dunn on January 25, 2010

The apache web server is officially the most popular web server in the world, beating Microsoft IIS. And as it’s open source, it’s free. You can download the apache webserver onto your own PC and run a webserver from anywhere. However, the process is a little technical with some integration required if you want SQL or any other additions. But there is an easy solution. It’s called xampp, and it’s the simple way to install apache. Today’s video is a guided tutorial on how to use xampp to install an apache web server.

The apache software foundation and open source community of worldwide supporters and programmers, keep the web server software well maintained and regularly updated with useful features and functionality. They all help to make it the leading web server software of choice for most organisations. And it boasts a rich collection of features. It can run on Windows, UNIX, Linux, Sun Solaris and MAC OS. The code is small, fast and secure. It supports SQL and PHP, the database and programming language of choice for most professional developers.

So, why would you want to install it on your own PC. I don’t recommend you use it to start your own hosting company, although you could. Instead, your PC becomes a test server for easy building and developing of web sites and especially dynamic applications. For example, you can test drupal, wordpress or any software application or design changes quickly and simply, without disturbing your live webserver. And xampp makes installation a snap. Even I installed it without any fuss. And it worked first time.

Installing your own apache web server is easy peasy.
