What is google’s next move?

John Reese has published a free internet marketing report with predictions for 2010. In internet marketing: the road ahead, he asks are you paying attention, do you know what google’ next move is? Why should you care? Because google is a goliath on the internet and what they do can affect the fortunes of most webmasters and website owners.

Do you remember when they introduced google adwords? These small ad boxes on their search pages. How were they ever going to make money charging a few cents a click? Google’s total adverting revenues in 2008 were $21 billion and much of this was from google adwords. So I think we can conclude adwords is a massive success, generating huge income not just for google but for many of their advertisers too.

Google recently announced, now their acquisition of doubleclick has passed government approval, they will be rolling out a self-serve display ad service. These are banner and display adverts, which many people thought had died when the internet bubble burst in 2001. But actually, are still alive, kicking and making money for advertisers. In today’s video Ryan Deiss from driving traffic reckons you can make banner ads work even on a tight budget.

Will google do the same to thing to banner and display ads as they did to the Pay Per Click advertising market? John Reese thinks they ‘cleaned up’ in the PPC market because they made it an automated, self-serve process. Will they revolutionise the banner and display advertising game?

You’ll need to pay attention to google if you want to know.
