Inside the mind of google

With so much of our online lives spent trying to get a high ranking in google’s Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), we are facinated by anything google. So a one hour interview with google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, had me engrossed.  Eric was recruited from Novell by google founders Larry and Sergey. In the interview he talks candidly about Microsoft, Yahoo, Twitter and Facebook. And with a discussion about the future of search, it’s a fresh look at where google may be heading.

Talking of fresh, with the advent of facebook, twitter and blogs, is fresh content more important than old content to the search engines? SEOmoz’s Dr Pete was determined to find out with a dodgy experiment that could have gone wrong when he asked does google likes it when you are fresh? The outcome? Don’t change URLs.

Anyway, the question on my mind is should we be spending so much time on google? Is it worth it? According to Comscore, it is, because google is still the No. 1 search engine on planet earth. Comscore reports search activity around the world jumped 41% during the last year. And google is the most popular engine with a 67.5% market share. Who do you think is No. 2 and No. 3? The facination with google continues.

Google is a development powerhouse too. You cannot fail to have noticed the new applications it’s rolling out, from google chrome to new operating systems. And it’s recently added some more features to the familiar search. Carl Hepburn explores the google options for search results. The related terms is useful. It’s the way the human mind works. Is search technology getting closer to how we really think?

And if you want to go a little deeper, SEOchat examines how to use google insight for search engine optimisation. Google insight is similar to google trends. You can examine a particular niche in detail by looking for current and future trends. But google insight gives you more detail on trends, seasonality and geography.

Perhaps the only real way to get inside the mind of google is to get a crystal ball.

I’m not surprised that google ranks at no 1 – if we want to find something we all just google it.  I don’t even think about other search engines, google is set as my homepage.
