Google gets interactive

by Terry Dunn on October 13, 2009

The google geeks have been very busy developing all sorts of new and interesting applications recently. Google voice was actually released back in March with the purpose of managing your voice communications. Google voice improves the way you use your phone. Some of the features include transcripts of voicemail, archive and search all your text messages and make low-priced international calls. Now with the help of user feedback, google have added invite a friend to google voice.

Google maps has a unique, collaborative new feature called google building maker. The aim is to create 3-dimensional models of every structure on earth. Should be a quick win! But they are not doing it alone. Google wants your help. Pick a building and construct a model using aerial photographs and simple 3-D shapes provided for you. It fun, simple, and apparently, it’s addictive too.

The geeks have also been busy making quality improvements, adding sorting and exporting to google squared. The idea behind google squared is to extract useful facts from all over the web and present them in the form of a table. Quite a complex task, but then the google philosophy is all about returning quality results to user searches. It’s what makes google so successful.

Google friend connect has been around a while but is quite a powerful if overlooked application to increase the ‘stickiness’ of any website. It enriches your site with social features by allowing visitors to become members of a wider community with Yahoo, Twitter, AOL, Orkut and Plaxo. The idea is to get your website visitors to engage with each other and the wider community. Watch the video to learn more.

Encouraging user interaction is the true spirit of today’s Internet.
