Web writing style guide

by Terry Dunn on January 18, 2010

If you are writing for your website or blog, following a set of guidelines is essential. Even if you are a great writer, you need some guidance on writing style. And I have just the resource for you. The web style guide is brilliant. It’s a very comprehensive guide to basic design and writing principles for creating web sites. Even if you hand your design work over to a web designer, it worth reading this guide. You can buy it on amazon or read it online.

The web style guide covers process, usability, information architecture, interface design, site structure, page structure, page design, typography, editorial style, forms and applications, graphics and multimedia. It’s written by Patrick Lynch, artist, designer, writer and photographer, and Sarah Horton, writer, usability advocate and user-centred designer. These two authors have created a true reference to web design and writing style.

And staying with experts, today’s video is from the ebullient sagerock who is interviewing Rocky Lewis on writing for the web. Rocky is a long-time, experienced writer and starts the interview by giving you 3 tips for effective web writing. She says make your writing concise, scannable and brief. I absolutely agree with her. I always go for brevity in my writing. And I break my articles down into short paragraphs that make one point each. I sometimes use bullets. These make my article scannable. You would be surprised at how many readers scan and don’t read. The simplest tips can often make the biggest difference.

As a writer, never stop learning how to write better.
