Show don’t tell

by Terry Dunn on December 22, 2009

In today’s video Suzanne Richardson from Early to Rise has some simple advice for all writers of every genre to magically improve your writing. Show don’t tell. So, is that it? Yes, that’s it. But it’s simple and powerful. When you are writing any kind of copy, you need simple advice and instructions. It’s hard enough sticking to the flow and remembering a whole host of other things. Complicated advice doesn’t work. you need simple. And this is simple.

Tell a story. A story that shows what you want your reader to get. Stories are not just for children, we all love them. With a story you show what’s real instead of what’s abstract. In the video Suzanne gives three examples to illustrate her point. It doesn’t need to be a long story either, it can be short. Infact it’s better. Be specific. Paint a picture with words. If you follow this advice, I guarantee your writing will be more powerful, more credible and much more interesting to your readers.

Brian Clark is big on stories too. In copywriting 101: an introduction to copywriting, he says “you need to tell compelling stories that grab attention and connect with people”. Copywriting 101 is a 10 step tutorial designed to get you up and running with the basics of writing great copy in 10 easy lessons. It’s a quick read and excellent advice from one of the top bloggers and copywriters in the business. All you need to invest is a little time.

Stories are the best show don’t tell technique you can use.
