How to be creative

Many people think they haven’t got a creative bone in their body and ‘creativity’ is just for artists. Of course, it isn’t true. Believe it or not we were born creative. We are creative. It’s actually part of our DNA. You might be thinking your DNA is flawed, but really, you have just forgotten how to use your creative spark.

But how does creative writing mix with copywriting or writing content for your website? Surely they are totally different styles of thinking and writing. And to some degree, it’s true. Creative writing is a ‘right brain’ activity and copywriting is ‘left brain’. Creative writing is the result of inspiration and copywriting is the result of perspiration. All true, but, you need to mix them together to get the best results.

Copyblogger has written an interesting article on the common traits of creative people. And I certainly agree with trait No. 10. A great copywriter pushes the envelope. He is able to find new and refreshing angles, tell great stories or entertain his readers in a captivating way. In short, he is using creativity as well as following his proven step-by-step copywriting methodology. Right brain and left brain working together.

So, is creative writing just for novels, poetry and fiction? Absolutely not! everyone wants to be entertained and engaged whatever they are reading, or doing for that matter. We live in an “entertain me” society.

I always look for writing inspiration from my google RSS reader. I’m signed up to many great bloggers, who give me loads of ideas every day. All I need are my own opinions.
