How to be a better writer

How to be a better writer is a skill everybody wants to have. Okay, almost everybody. You write at work, school, college, in your business, infact everywhere. But if you think I’m going to recommend a teacher, tutorial or training course, you’d be wrong. It’s much simpler than that. I think Matthew Stibble says it all in his article about kindle and stanza. If you want to be a great writer, be a great reader. The advice is spot on. I read a lot and it’s helped me to be a better writer. You learn by osmosis. It just seeps into your brain while you are reading. The more you read, the better you write.

Trouble is, I have books at home I still haven’t read yet because there are not enough hours in a day to read them all. But we all waste a lot of time traveling, and I’ve seen people on the train reading with an amazon kindle. These things are becoming popular. Infact, amazon reckons it’s their best selling product. But what’s it like reading with the equivalent of a small notebook? Surprisingly good. In this week’s video brighthand reviews the amazon kindle 2 and recommends it.

The kindle 2 uses E-ink technology to create a favourable reading experience, without the eyestrain caused by backlighting. The screen only needs power to change an image, not maintain it, so battery life is weeks instead of hours. Very clever! Kindle is well-made, well-designed and stylish. Reading a book is fun and easy. It also uses text to speech technology, which works with earphones. Buying ebooks are easy as they download in the background as you read, and with over 420,000 ebooks available there is plenty of choice. Prices on amazon start at $259. I’ll let you decide if that’s good value or not.

Make no mistake, the more you read the better you will write.
