Good copywriting tips

January 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Writing copy for the web or print is a well-paid profession. Why is this? Because most of us cannot write and very few people can write great copy, that keeps you reading, and makes you want to buy.

Most of us need a little help here, and I include myself in this category too. I’m always looking for ways to improve my writing, and in particular, my copywriting ability, because that is what makes money.

There are some fundamental rules for good copywriting, and the first is to write from your audience’s point of view. You need to get inside your reader’s heads and write about what they want.

You absolutely must write a great headline that grabs your reader and offers them your most important benefit. And on the subject of benefits, write benefits, not features. Use features to back up your benefits.

Personalise your writing. Imagine you are writing to a friend. And when it’s time to edit your masterpiece, remove redundant words. Write short, punchy sentences. Use direct words and simple language. Write for an eight-year old.

If you are writing a sales letter, what should it contain? here are the basic building blocks of a good sales letter,

  • A benefit-laden, punchy headline
  • Introduce the problem
  • Propose your solution
  • Build a list of benefits and features: the more the better
  • Justify the price by comparison
  • state your guarantee
  • List all your free bonuses
  • Ask for the order
  • Restate a benefit as a PS
