Are copywriting courses worth it?

As webmasters and website owners, we know what a valuable skill copywriting can be. It’s one of those skills that is so difficult to put your finger on. When you read a salesletter, is the copy well written? I suppose the first clue is whether you are prepared to open your wallet, but there’s more to it than that.

The real test is in the figure you and I never see, unless we stump up thousands for top class copy and record every visitor and every buyer.  It’s all in the conversion rate. It truly is an indefinable quality in the writing. A quality that draws the reader into the copy and sooner or later makes him reach for his wallet and buy.

Can you learn these skills or is it a talent? For the most part, the top copywriters think you can learn to be a great copywriter. And if you have a product to sell, you could save a lot of money by learning the art and skill of copywriting. Infact, you could even turn it into a new career, because good copywriters are in demand.

With this in mind, copybogger’s Brian Clark has reviewed two copywriting courses. The ultimate desktop copy coach from Clayton Makepeace is billed as the Makepeace Method for out-thinking, out-selling and out-earning your competition. The Clayton Makepeace group have sold over $1.5 billion of products. So, this course deserves your serious attention. With 27 chapters and more than 1000 pages, it will need to be outstanding to be worth the $1500 price tag.

The other copyblogger review is AWAI’s accelerated program for 6-figure copywriting or often referred to as the Michael Masterson copywriting course (because he wrote it). Michael Masterson is a top tier copywriter and has sold over a $1 billion of products and services using direct response copywriting, mostly for Agora, a very successful publisher.

With over 41 chapters and 700 pages, it’s big. It costs $39 per installment (you can receive it by post in 13 installments) or a one-off cost of $457. But is it worth it? Now I can speak from experience here, because I bought it and read it. And it’s excellent. Very easy to read and understand, it demystifies what makes excellent copy and takes you step-by-step how to write great copy for yourself.

AWAI run copywriting bootcamps and the featured video shows AWAI TV interviewing web copywriter Pam Foster as she talks about the huge opportunities for web copywriters. It seem AWAI is more than just a copywriting course, it’s a community too. It’s well worth watching.

Good copywriting courses are not cheap, but they are worth it.
